2014 Middle School Principal of the Year Honored

Westbrook Middle School Principal Matt Nelson Named Maine’s Middle Level Principal of the Year

Augusta, ME – The Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) has named Matt Nelson, Principal of Westbrook Middle School, as Maine’s Middle Level Principal of the Year.Nelson received the award for being a tireless advocate for the students and staff of Westbrook Middle School.  He has focused the attention of the school on student achievement, using data effectively to impact growth. 

As a thoughtful, proactive systems thinker, when he speaks, people listen.  He is serious about making school a great experience for everyone and embodies a headstrong momentum toward success.  Acknowledgement of the accomplishments of students, teachers, and school community members are varied, frequent, and meaningful.In announcing Nelson's selection as Maine’s 2014 Middle Level Principal of the Year, MPA Executive Direc-tor Richard Durost noted that “Matt Nelson has a strategic plan for keeping 'First things First' so that effective instructional leadership and administrative oversight provide a strong foundation for teaching and learning.  He is visible and energetic, recognizing that school success depends largely on the quality of relationships and the health of the school culture.”As Maine’s 2014 Middle Level Principal of the Year, Nelson will be honored at the MPA’s Spring Conference awards banquet on March 27, 2014.  Next fall, he will also be honored by the National Association of Sec-ondary School Principals (NASSP) in corporate sponsorship with MetLife in Washington, D.C.Nelson received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Joseph's College and a Master of Science degree from the University of Southern Maine.  He served the Westbrook School System as athletic administrator prior to being named principal of Westbrook Middle School in 2010.Nelson is active in the Maine Principals' Association, serving on committees and participating in professional development offerings.The Maine Principals’ Association is a professional association representing Maine’s K-12 principals and assistant principals.  The Association dates back to 1921 and focuses its work on promoting the principal-ship, supporting principals as educational leaders, and promoting and administering interscholastic activities in grades 9-12.

The Maine Principals' Association's Supervision and Evaluation Committee has taken the initiative to review existing models of administrator evaluation, and to develop a tool that incorporates performance-based standards and a process to ensure professional growth.  Therefore, the committee offers the following Administrator Evaluation Model for use by school administrative units in full or with revisions made at the local level.

2011 Principal Study Survey
The Maine Principal Study has documented since 1997 how Maine principals experience their work and feel about their effectiveness. The 2011 Maine Principal Study survey was distributed electronically, and several items were dropped because they had not yielded particularly useful information during previous administrations.
