Math Coaches at the Elementary Level
Cape Cod Elementary School, New Sharon
At Cape Cod Hill School in New Sharon (Mt. Blue RSD) we have a math specialist. She spends most of her time coaching and teaching so a teacher can observe her. She knows our Eureka K-5 math program inside out. We adopted the program 3.5 years ago and our EmpowerMe scores are improving. Our specialist finds resources that assist teachers and students in being successful in math. In addition to coaching, she also does a very few intervention groups. We try to use her mostly for improving instruction vs. as an interventionist.

SAD 44, Bethel
The math coach works cooperatively with all instructional staff to plan and implement appropriate mathematics instructional programs. They provide demonstration lessons in classrooms, team-teach, and coach teachers with their math content, best teaching practices, curriculum, and assessment strategies using knowledge of current research. They also work to develop and present quality mathematics professional development for all instructional staff K-12 through in-service days, staff meetings, and afterschool professional learning communities. The coach participates in monthly staff meetings and follow through on tasks discussed. They meet with grade level staff regularly for unit and lesson planning, and reports monthly to building administrators about what work is going on in the district. When possible, the coach works with the Focus School team leaders to improve instruction in the Focus Schools. They work closely with the elementary, middle school, and math curriculum team leaders to develop district math curriculum and plan future mathematics professional development for our schools. In addition, the coach analyzes student test data for classrooms, schools, and the district to identify areas of focus in mathematics. To facilitate relationships with the community they maintain a blog to share the math work happening in MSAD #44, also attends school open houses and parent conference nights. If it is appropriate, the coach contributes to school monthly newsletters to share ideas about math with parents. To meet all of these goals, they participate in the UMF math coach trainings, the UMF math coach mentoring program, math trainings provided by the Department of Education, and any other relevant professional development that will help our math teachers and students.
