Writing Programs Used in Maine Schools

What are some of the writing programs used in Maine Schools?

(We asked and many schools responded. If you have a particular writing program your school uses and you are experiencing success demonstrated by scores and/or student growth, please e-mail Holly and we will add it to our bank of resources to help each other!) Thank you!

Portland – Riverton Elementary

Riverton Elementary uses the Teacher’s College Reader’s / Writer’s Workshop Model. It has been very effective for our school and has resulted in significant gains in literacy.

Southport – Southport Central School

WriteSteps is the best program I have used in a school.

Greenbush – Dunn (Helen S.) School

My teachers visited classrooms in Cumberland to observe teachers using the Lucy Calkins writing program. It’s new for our data but it is looking like an excellent choice for us.

Bowdoinham – Bowdoinham Community School

RSU 75 has been working K-8 with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project for 4-5 years and has some demonstrated gains in writing.

Ellsworth – Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School

We use Lucy Calkins and our experience has been wonderful and our writing has changed unbelievable. We would be happy to chat with anyone!

2011 Principal Study Survey
The Maine Principal Study has documented since 1997 how Maine principals experience their work and feel about their effectiveness. The 2011 Maine Principal Study survey was distributed electronically, and several items were dropped because they had not yielded particularly useful information during previous administrations. This latest survey revealed some interesting trends. To view the 2011 survey, click here.
