A major focus of the work of the Maine Principals’ Association’s Curriculum and Instruction Committee lies in the answer to two questions:
- What are we doing to address students who aren’t learning?
- What interventions hold the most promise?
In person, in surveys, and in conference evaluations, members have told the committee they are curious about what other Maine schools are doing and are hungry for information about specific strategies that they might replicate in their own schools.
Using the following definition for “intervention,” “…provide[s] students with additional time and support for learning as soon as they experience difficulty” (Richard DuFour, Rebecca DuFour, et al., Whatever It Takes: How Professional Learning Communities Respond When Kids Don’t Learn. Bloomington, Indiana: Solution Tree, 2004, p.7.), the committee collected, in late fall 2009 and winter 2010, examples of tier one, two, and three interventions for both academics and behavior as well as universal screening tools being implemented in Maine schools.
It is with great pleasure that we are able to share with you the responses from forty-seven different schools. This information covers all grade levels and all areas of the state. For convenience, we have divided the document into sections – Elementary, K-8, Middle Level, Middle/High School, High School, and K-12. Please feel free to replicate any of the interventions in your own school and to contact any of the schools listed to receive more complete information.
Furthermore, the information presented should be viewed as a beginning and not a be-all-and-end-all. We encourage members to forward other examples of interventions and universal screening tools that are being used in their schools to the MPA so that we can add them to our repertoire. Please use the attached Intervention Information form to share what your school is doing in this arena.
